A milestone is
"a significant point or event in the project"
(A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, 4th edition, 2008).

The picture shows a milestone along the historical Ludwig-Donau-Main-Canal in Bavaria/ Southern Germany linking the Rhine with the Danube river system. It dates back to the 1840s when the unit of measurement for time was the day rather than the hour or even the minute as nowadays.

Here you can find important, helpful and amusing material about Project Management.
